Growth beats Value, Investors Anticipate the Fed
After three consecutive weekly losses, U.S. Stocks opened higher yesterday with the S&P 500 returning 1.26%; the index has now returned 1.5% for the year. Mid and Small cap companies have produced superior returns relative to their large cap counter parts thus far in 2015 with the S&P 400 index (Mid Cap) returning 4.2% and the Russell 2000 index (Small Cap) returning 3.14%. The largest divergence among market capitalizations and styles, however, exists between Growth and Value stocks. All eyes this week are on the FOMC in anticipation of the results of their March meeting, which will be released on Wednesday, 3/18. This meeting not only culminates with the release of their statement but also a press conference with Fed Chair Janet Yellen. The Fed has to decide whether or not they will be removing the word “patience” from the language that discusses the potential timing of the first rate hike via the Federal Funds Target Rate. Making their decision more difficult is the potential positive impact of lower oil on the U.S. economy and the negative impact a stronger dollar has on exporters and multi-national corporate profits. The U.S. Dollar has appreciated almost 14% against the Euro this year alone and the pair now trade near parity for just $1.06/EUR.
Crude oil contracts in the U.S. are now trading at $43.40 a barrel, a six-year low, and there appears to be more downside risk than upside catalysts over the short term. According to an article from Nasdaq, “…Wednesday’s government report could show that stockpiles rose by 4.0 million barrels in the week ended March 13.” Additional reports this week have shown that U.S. capacity to store oil is also diminishing.
